Creativity is the process of expressing original thoughts or ideas. I’ve heard people my entire life say, “I’m just not very creative,” but everyone possesses some form of creativity. We all have thoughts and ideas that are unique to us and we all express those things in different ways. Sharing that creativity within us, not only is beneficial to our own well-being, but blesses others in turn. Creativity is a gift.

Some express themselves through dance, some through drama, some through music, others writing, while for some it is simply through their voice of encouragement. Even blogging can be creative. While I love to write and even sing, my favorite way to express

myself is through crafting. I can sit down on a busy day, pull out some cardstock, glue, buttons, and ribbon and craft an encouraging card in minutes. It gives me a way to focus my energy on something positive and when I’m finished, I have a beautiful handmade card with which I can bless another. After a particularly stressful week, you might find me at my kitchen table working on a scrapbook or crafting a handmade bookmark. Journaling through a series of photographs allows me to process my thoughts and emotions during that particular time or season of life. Turn on some music and I’ve engaged all of my creativity in one setting.

For me, creativity is as much about encouraging others, as it is the process. Making gorgeous cards and scrapbook layouts is meaningless unless shared with others. As a National Guard wife, I have plenty of opportunities to send a little encouragement to a fellow wife. There is always someone in need of a little “pick-me-up,” especially during deployments.

I remember during my first deployment in 2006, I hosted an “I Survived 100 Days” party for my fellow Army wives. I used my creativity to make goody bags for each wife, to prepare snacks, and even to add festive decorations to my home. We shared with each other struggles that we were facing. We laughed at each other’s attempts to be “Mr. Fix It” around our houses.  I’m certain that very few of those wives remember much about our FRG meetings, or if the secretary notes were typed, but they still talk about that party-a little creativity, a little time, and a lifetime of memories.

How do you express yourself? Are you one of those people refusing to see the creativity within you? Or are you using that gift to bless others. No matter which outlet you use to express yourself, creativity is a gift to be shared with those around you. So get out there. Express yourself!
