Barriers, fears, obstacles, stumbling blocks...as adults, we've all experienced these at one time or another, whether in our personal life or in our business.  Kids, however, are relentless in their pursuit of what they want.  Just watch any young child in a store hounding his parents.  It really does become a battle of the "wills."

Why is it that some adults give in and give up so easily when they come across the first hurdle in business?  On the other hand, why do some refuse to take 'no' for an answer and keep moving forward?  I think part of it is how we're raised and part of it is that some people come to realize that failure is not an option.

For example, when I attended my son's Ranger School graduation at Ft. Benning, Georgia, I was simply amazed at this group of men who simply refused to give in to the grueling nine weeks they went through just to become a Ranger hopeful.

The class graduates with about half the men they started with, not because of them voluntarily leaving, but because there are things they have to do that most people simply won't.  Things that were required, many of them just couldn't do, yet they will come back again and again to try and pass.  They had to learn new skills and get themselves in the mindset that failure was not an option.

How does this apply to you starting a business?  Think about this for a minute.  When you're ready to start your own business, there are going to be things you'll need to learn just to get started.  For example, learning how to create a business and marketing plan may be something you've never done before, yet they are vital to your long-term success.  Starting a business is more than just business and marketing plans, though.

While there are the technical aspects of your business that you can get out of a book, entrepreneurs are always learning their entire lives through experiences and self-development.  It's the experiences that you go through in your business that help prepare you for the next step.  It's all a process on the journey of being a successful entrepreneur.

Take babies, for example.  They first learn to roll over.  They crawl; then slowly pull themselves up to stand and eventually take those first steps.  Once they get through the stumbling of walking, ONLY then are they ready to run.  You never see a baby go from rolling over directly to running and they definitely don't learn it in a book, nor does it happen in one day.  They never let obstacles get in their way because they are determined to walk and run.

There are going to be obstacles in your business, and you have to go through the process of experiences in order to move forward to get past the obstacles that are yet to come. Going through the process is part of the journey.  It is what will help your business succeed for the long term and determine the person you become. It's not always easy, but it's definitely worth it!
