So, your PCS orders say Fort Bragg bound?! The first thing I wondered when I heard we were moving here was, “HOW CLOSE IS THE BEACH?” One of the great things about Fort Bragg is that you are a stone’s throw from all different parts of nature. If you like hiking and white water rafting the mountains are only a few hours away. If you enjoy the beach and soaking up the sun, it too is only a few hours away.
We PCS’d from Fort Campbell, KY to Fort Bragg, NC. I was in shock at how big Fort Bragg is. Fort Bragg currently has two commissary and PX locations for your shopping convenience. One on the north side of post and the other on the south. Each location offers similar shopping and fast food establishments. In the near future, each location will be equipped with a gas station and more dinning out choices.
The Soldier Support Center is one of the first places you will want to stop by. This building is centrally located on Fort Bragg and houses many of the services that you and your family will need. CYS, ACS and travel to name a few. Across the street from the Soldier Support Center is the Tolson Youth Center. Like many other posts the youth center offers a variety of activities to keep your children busy all year long. Some of the current activities include baseball, golf, cheerleading, gymnastics, piano, dance, and swimming lessons. Fort Bragg is one of the only posts to offer an indoor ice skating rink. Cleland Ice Multisport Complex offers ice skating year round. There are many open skate times to pick from as well as, private or group lessons. Hockey teams and lessons are also offered at Cleland Ice. Fort Bragg’s CYS recently started allowing parents to enroll their children in classes using the online portal. The online system allows you to pay your childcare bills, update account information and sign up for new classes. You must be registered with CYS in order to access the online portal.
Smith Lake is a nature lover’s dream. They offer horse back riding lessons at the stables. You can walk one of many trails or take a plunge in the lake when the summer sun gets to be too much.
Womack Army Medical Center is where you will receive most of your medical care. The hospital is a newer facility and houses most parts of your medical care. Parking can be tricky at Womack. Make sure you arrive a several minutes before your appointment to allow time to find a parking spot. The pharmacy runs things a little different here and I was confused at first. When you find yourself heading to the pharmacy remember these two little tips: 1) find a seat and 2) watch for your name on the board. Once your name is placed on the board your prescription is ready to be picked up and you can get in line.
When you travel off post you will venture into Fayetteville, NC. Fayetteville has many things to offer the military community. There is Cross Creek Mall, an indoor sky diving facility, indoor rock climbing, the Special Operations Museum and Freedom Memorial Park. Throughout the summer there are free concerts and events at Freedom Park.
If I could sum up Fort Bragg in one word, it would be adventure. There is always something to do or something to see. Even just sitting outside with a glass of ice tea is an adventure-a relaxing adventure. Whether you choose to take a bite out of life each weekend or relax and watch the clouds pass by, make the most of your time here at Fort Bragg. You won’t find another place like it. HOOAH!
